We have introduced a new way of working to improve the quality of care for patients with hand and wrist fractures

We have based our clinic on the award winning model devised by Mr Lech Rymaszewski , Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The traditional models of care mean that all patients with hand and wrist injuries are routinely asked to attend a hospital fracture clinic appointment in order to access help or advice regardless of the nature of their injury, their particular needs or the costs involved.

Our model aims to ensure that the patient is seen by the Right Person, in the Right Place and at the Right Time.

Our model of care

This model of care is based on the fact that many hand and wrist injuries will heal with time and all that patients need is clear advice and time. Some patients benefit from specialist advice and treatment from skilled hand therapists in order to get the best outcome. A relatively small number of fractures need surgery.

This model aims to minimise delays that occur before a patient is directed to self care, specialist hand therapy or surgical review as appropriate. The evidence also shows that this model saves the NHS unnecessary expenditure and minimises the time wasted with unnecessary appointments for patients so that more patients get the care that they need in good time.

Mr Raymond Anakwe is the project lead. Our work depends on the teamwork of the full multi-disciplinary team. The project has been developed in partnership with the National Institute for Health Research-Collaborative Across Healthcare Research (NIHR CLAHRC NWL).
